Stemmario Archinto - Blasonature
The Stemmario Archinto derives its name from its seventeenth-century owner, Ottavio Archinti, Count of Barate from 1634, as well as a famous antiquarian. His much-celebrated collection of stone inscriptions was eventually acquired by the City Council of Milan in 1860. The Insignia Familiarum Codex ended up, however, in the possession of Victor Emanuel of Savoy and it is still kept in Turin’s Royal Library. There are two volumes of the original manuscript. The first one dates back to the second half of the Sixteenth century and the second dates to only a few decades later. Together, they reproduce over 4800 coats of arms, nine on each page and mostly belonging to Lombard families, the works of a number of unknown artists. The compilation is heavily based on the fifteenth-century Stemmario Trivulziano. Nevertheless, in the case of many of the coats of arms it represents their first known manuscript source, thus its extraordinary relevance from a historical and heraldic point of view. The current edition gives the blazons of all the coats of arms shown in the original Codex thanks to the renowned expertise of the Swiss scholar, Carlo Maspoli, while twelve long-lost plates from this armorial, bearing municipal insignia, are reproduced in full colour in the appendix. An index in alphabetical order completes this edition in order to make research easier.
